Maridadi designs was established in 1989 by Allen Hallet, renowned wildlife artist, safari guide & game conservationist. Allen grew up in the African bush which was teeming with elephant, giraffe, buffalo and all the other plains game. His school holidays and any spare time was spent nurturing his passion for African wildlife and he started portraying them artistically in bronze in 1986. In 2003, Allen began looking for a suitable medium to create functional commercial art/ giftware and this was the beginning of the move to pewter castings when Maridadi Designs was launched. Each piece in the Maridadi pewter range starts life as a wax model sculpted by Allen, which is then encased in silicone and strengthened with fiberglass to make a mould. This then goes on to make an epoxy pattern, which is where the fine details of each animal is added. A final mould is made for the pewter casting and once cast in lead-free Britannia pewter, each piece is hand finished by a small dedicated skilled team at the studio/workshop in the KZN Midlands. The finest 18/10 stainless steel stubs are used in all cutlery items. There are now over 100 intricately designed pieces in the range which is growing all the time and ensuring that Maridadi name is synonymous with design, detail and quality. With the designers background in art, most of the projects receive an artistic twist.
